Finding Inspiration in Friday Night Lights: Part of Something Greater

Last week we discussed Smash’s desire to secure another scholarship and play college ball and also how he was coming to terms that he may never play football again the way he once had.  His mentor, Coach Taylor, was doing the best he could to encourage Smash, but we saw that Smash was his own biggest obstacle to reach his goal.

During his ongoing training it seemed that Smash, who once was extremely quick and tough, was having an aversion to being hit while running the ball.   It was stipulated to be fear, fear of injury or maybe fear of failing, but fear nonetheless:

I don’t know what it is.  I’ve never ever been scared playing football…always played like nothing could touch me.

I know you think I can be who I was, but I think I was only great because I was a Dillon Panther.

I was part of something bigger than myself.
The team needed me to be great, so I was great.

As leaders in churches, corporations, projects, whatever, we need to facilitate and allow our team to soar to their true potential.  Our team needs to feel supported and trusted.  They need to, not just feel, but know they are part of something successful and the leadership will provide support to help them succeed.  Successful leaders lead successful teams who help successful leaders lead successful teams where all are strengthened by a successful organization to move to their full potential thus making the organization a successful organism.  Visions are accomplished when people are engaged and part of something greater than them.  They are great because they are needed to be great and you want them to be great.
